As in previous years, Christian residents of Riderwood can celebrate the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18 to 25, with people all over the world. The theme, “Justice, Only Justice, You Shall Pursue,” is taken from Deuteronomy 16:20.
Some information from the website of the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute: “The initial work on the theme for this year’s Week of Prayer was prepared by a group of representatives from different parts of Indonesia, including the Communion of Churches in Indonesia and the Indonesian Catholic Bishops’ Conference. The texts were finalized during a meeting of the International Committee of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.”
Further information from the Scripture and Prayer Guide, Day 8: “Throughout the eight days of this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the daily reflections have considered many difficult situations facing the world today, including greed, violence, exclusion, exploitation, poverty, pollution, hunger and trafficking. Churches in Indonesia are conscious of these issues as challenges facing all Christians.”
This year, copies of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Daily Scripture & Prayer Guide will again be in the Pastoral Ministries office, and there will be no scheduled prayer gatherings in the chapel. Instead, Christian residents will be free to use the Guide personally in their apartments or in the chapel, or to meet with neighbors in a location of their choosing to share the readings and to pray and dialogue together, on the days and at the times of their choosing.
In January, Riderwood residents can also check the news and other sources to find out about celebrations of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in this area and around the world.
