The African American History Club of Riderwood invites all residents and staff to participate in a series of events during Black History Month highlighting the rich cultural traditions and concerns of 14% of the U.S. population. That history belongs to all Americans.
Friday, February 1: This is National Go Red Day. It is a day when the American Heart Association wants to remind all Americans about the importance of maintaining good heart health and health in general. The African American History Club is asking everyone to wear red all day as a reminder of these issues. On the previous day, look for literature about heart health to be distributed at tables set up in the dining areas of all the clubhouses.
Tuesday, February 5: The always popular Southern Food Luncheon will be held on that day in Maryland Hall between 11:30 a.m. & 2:00 p.m. All residents, staff, family, and friends are welcome to enjoy home-style cooking and good conversation. Residents may use their MOD for themselves or their guests or pay a fee to be announced this month.
Saturday, February 15: At 7:30 p.m. in the Encore Theater, the multi-talented Lomax Sisters from the Queen’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Beltsville, will grace us with their soaring gospel voices. Click here to learn more about this concert.
February 1-28: Throughout this month, daily profiles of African American notables will appear on Riderwood TV. They will be written by AAHC member Rebecca Griffin & her committee. See whom you recognize & look for little-known facts about people you may or may not have heard about.
February 1-28: Also, AAHC member & recording secretary Levern Allen and her committee will prepare showcase displays throughout Riderwood neighborhoods emphasizing the theme “Instruments of Peace.” Nobel Peace Prize winners, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be among those honored.
Wednesday, February 27: At 1:00 p.m. in the Maryland Hall, the African American History Club will participate in the annual Riderwood Opportunities Fair sponsored by Community Resources. AAHC members will be present to tell you all about our group, our activities & how you may join us at our meetings. They are held on the first Thursday of every month (except July & August) in the Encore Theater at 2:00.
