Live Opera Highlights to feature The Beautiful Galatea

By Mike Beard

Producer, Live Opera Highlights Group

The Live Opera Highlights season continues on Wednesday, December 19 in the intimate setting of the Riderwood Chapel with its warm acoustics.

The one-hour program will feature highlights from Franz von Suppé’s The Beautiful Galatea performed by members of the excellent Bel Cantanti Opera Company under the direction of Dr. Katerina Souvorova.

Galatea tells the story of the sculptor Pygmalion who falls in love with his marble creation. He prays to Venus, the goddess of love that the statue is brought to life. The wish is granted, but Galatea turns out to be a very independent creation.

The lush operatic score combines the time-honored traditions of old Vienna with the newer style of Offenbach. You are bound to leave the chapel with a song in your heart, a smile on your face and lilt in your step.

The performance will take place on Wednesday, December 19 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $10 and will be on sale at all clubhouses December 17 and 18 as well as the day of the performance at the door.
