One of the principal goals of Riderwood’s Sustainability Committee is to help reduce the community’s “carbon footprint.” A person’s carbon footprint is defined as the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds released into the environment as a result of the consumption of fossil fuels. Residents and staff, in partnership, have steadily expanded our recycling efforts and have managed to make substantial progress in reducing our overall footprint.
Although a modest recycling program was instituted at Riderwood when the community opened its doors in 2000 and have received awards for the past nine years running. What follows is a short history of recycling at Riderwood:
