Upcoming PAC performer highlights amazing career

by Performing Arts Council Promotions Committee

Alex Rybeck has been bringing top Broadway and cabaret singers to Encore Theater since 2006. For once, Riderwood audiences asked, could Alex just perform by himself? He agreed to do so on Friday, April 21 at 7:30 pm.

Pieces by Chopin, Poulenc, and Lehar, plus original compositions, will illustrate how Alex’s musical career developed. He grew up minutes from Riderwood in Kensington. During high school years, he was director-accompanist for musicals at Round House Theater and other Washington area theaters.

After graduating from Oberlin, he joined a graduate program in musical theater writing at New York University with an amazing faculty: Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Stephen Schwartz and Arthur Laurents, among others. Alex has performed at the Kennedy Center and Strathmore, all across America, and as far away as Australia.

Alex has accompanied and arranged for such celebrities as Kitty Carlisle Hart, Roberta Peters, Tammy Grimes, Tommy Tune and George Abbott. He will not refrain from sharing “inside stories” of these show biz legends. He promises “a surprise or two” plus audience interaction.

Stars Alex has accompanied here include Faith Prince, Liz Callaway, Jeff Harnar, Rita Gardner, Todd Murray, Marilyn Hausfeld, Celia Berk, Jason Graae and Anna Bergman. This Fall he will bring Harnar and Sally Mayes in “Double Take,” a show that’s been highly acclaimed in New York.

Sponsored by the Performing Arts Council. Tickets $5 on sale at all dining rooms, 4:30-6 pm, Monday-Tuesday, April 17-18.
