Last month in this space a fellow member of Riderwood’s Board of Directors, Jackson Bain, wrote about National Senior Campuses’ Vision Committee which he chairs. This month I’d like to introduce you to another NSC committee, the Diversity, Inclusion and Corporate Social Responsibility Committee, chaired by Mary Helen Lorenz.
The NSC D, I and CSR Committee works with the Erickson Living Management DICSR Council to support diversity among Erickson residents and staff and mandates efforts to make everyone associated with our communities welcome and comfortable in them. Diversity includes race and ethnicity, age, gender, abilities and beliefs, and sexual orientation. The committee is setting up metrics to ensure that diversity and inclusion are not simply ideals but are values implemented at every level of the organization. For example, we’re moving beyond mandating that a diverse group of candidates be considered for every job to looking at the degree of diversity among those actually hired. Progress has been made, but there is still a long way to go, especially in terms of recruiting for senior positions.
With regard to social responsibility, the broad goal is for individual communities and the management company to be good citizens, caring for our own and our neighbors. This value impacts not only the extensive volunteer activities of residents and staff and the employee-matching program, but also how the investment of assets accords with our values in, for example, the area of environmental sustainability. We can be proud of the work being done in this area at Riderwood and throughout the enterprise.
